1 Killed, Over 100 Injured in Devastating Hoboken Train Crash

(Update: Earlier reports claimed three people had died. Authorities now confirm there was only fatality and two others were severely injured. The article has been updated to reflect the latest information.)

Around 8:45 a.m. Thursday morning, a New Jersey commuter train crashed through the Hoboken station killing one and injuring more than 100, according to multiple reports.

Multiple outlets reported that one person was killed in the crash and two sustained life-threatening injuries. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said in a press conference Thursday afternoon that 108 people were injured in the accident.

Pictures taken by commuters and media alike show the destruction the train caused when it crashed into the station:

Passenger Linda Albelli told AOL News, “I thought to myself ‘Oh my god, he’s not slowing up, and this is where we’re usually stopped. We’re going too fast.’ And with that there was this tremendous crash.”

According to Albelli, once passengers got off the train they had to walk across the tracks to get to the platform, but could go nowhere else as the ceiling of the station had come down during the crash.

Passenger Bhagyesh Shah told CNN, “The next thing I know, I’m on the floor. We are plowing through something…and when the train came to a stop, I could see the parts of the roof on the first car and some of the debris next to me.”

Shah had been riding in the back of the front passenger car on the train. “I was hoping the train would stop now but it just didn’t stop. It kept going and going. At the end of it, it felt like eternity.”

According to officials, rail service has been suspended in and out of Hoboken. Those affected that do not have access to automobiles will have to find alternative methods for the rest of their commutes or return home.

N.J. State Police and the Federal Railroad Administration sent officials to assist and investigate the scene of the crash.
