Salma Hayek’s Brother Sues Ford Over Fatal Car Accident
Salma Hayek’s younger brother is taking car manufacturer Ford to court amid allegations a “catastrophic” mechanical failure was to blame for a 2014 accident which killed his art director friend.
Sami Hayek Jimenez was hospitalized in Los Angeles in February 2014 after losing control of his 2005 Ford GT, owned by his actress sister and her husband, and colliding with an oncoming truck.
The crash killed his passenger, Grammy-winning art director and photographer Ian Cuttler Sala, while Jimenez was left with several broken ribs and a head laceration. The truck driver, Alvin Javier Gomez, suffered a broken foot in the incident.
No arrests were made over the crash, but now Jimenez is placing the blame for the accident on bosses at Ford.
In legal papers filed in a U.S. court, Jimenez claims an issue with the Ford GT’s transaxle transferred too much power to one of the vehicle’s back wheels causing the sports car to hurtle into oncoming traffic, reports TMZ.
He goes on to brand the supposed malfunction a “catastrophic failure” and alleges Ford officials were aware of the problem in the sports cars, and of the “need to issue a recall” after other similar incidents had also been reported.
Ford executives have yet to comment on the lawsuit.
