The Rebellion’s Plot Thickens in Action-Packed New Trailer for ‘Rogue One’

One of the most tantalizing storylines of the Star Wars franchise has been the lead up to the original 1977 film and how the rebels managed to secure the plans for the Empire’s dreaded new super-weapon, the Death Star. Now, Disney and LucasFilm are set to reveal the story behind the legend.

On Thursday, the movie studio revealed a brand new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that offers key clues to the story’s plotline and how the film’s main hero, Jin Erso (Felicity Jones), and her family play a crucial role in the development of the planet-destroying Death Star. Watch:

The official synopsis from Disney reads:

“From Lucasfilm comes the first of the ‘Star Wars’ standalone films, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,’ an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the ‘Star Wars’ timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.”

Jones stars alongside Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. It was also announced on June 23 that James Earl Jones would once again voice the iconic Darth Vader.

Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards.

Along with the new trailer, LucasFilm and Disney unveiled a brand new poster showcasing the team of rebels out to steal the Death Star plans.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in U.S. theaters on December 16.
