Matt Smith to Play Robert Mapplethorpe
British actor Matt Smith is to tackle the role of iconic photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in a new film.
The former Doctor Who star will appear in the new movie opposite Girls actress Zosia Mamet, who will play Mapplethorpe’s lover and confidante, rocker Patti Smith.
The biopic, titled Mapplethorpe, is to be directed by Ondi Timoner, the filmmaker behind Russell Brand’s 2015 documentary Brand: A Second Coming. She announced the film will be a tribute to the photographer 25 years after his death.
“We’ll honor #Mapplethorpe on the 25th year of his death by bringing him to life on screen,” she tweeted.
Vulture reports that production begins this summer and that the film has a blessing from the Mapplethorpe Foundation.
Timoner added to Deadline, “After several years of developing this script and searching across the globe for the perfect talent to embody the rich and layered roles of visionary artists Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith, I am ecstatic to have found Matt Smith and Zosia Mamet. They will bring indelible passion, raw humanity, and authenticity to this timeless, inspiring story.”
Mapplethorpe died aged 42 in 1989 from an AIDS-related illness.
