Actress Kristen Stewart’s new supernatural drama has become the first film to receive boos instead of applause at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The 26-year-old Cesar Award-winning star reteamed with her Clouds of Sils Maria director Olivier Assayas for Personal Shopper, in which she plays a fashion stylist attempting to speak to the ghost of her dead brother, but the pair’s latest project doesn’t look like it will as acclaimed as their last.

When the movie was screened at the film festival on Monday, some viewers were a little underwhelmed by the ghostly flick and booed as the credits rolled.

However, some well-respected film critics are taking the negativity with a grain of salt, and they have jumped to the Twilight star’s defense.

Personal Shopper got the first boos I heard at #Cannes2016, which led me to only clap harder,” The Guardian critic Nigel M. Smith wrote. “I found it beguiling. Stewart is mesmerizing.”

IndieWire’s David Ehrlich echoed his colleagues sentiments, tweeting:

BBC Radio reviewer Jason Solomons is equally perplexed, as he was absolutely enthralled while watching the film, noting: “Odd boos at #PersonalShopper #Cannes2016 – it’s silly but mesmerizing and you can’t take your eyes off #KristenStewart – even if you want to.”

During a recent interview with Screen Daily, filmmaker Assayas admitted Personal Shopper was a bit of a challenge, but he knew Stewart possessed the acting ability to pull off the complexities of her character.

“It was a complicated process,” he told the outlet. “I would never have written the part of Maureen this way if I had not worked with Kristen on Clouds Of Sils Maria. At the time, I thought this might be a bit too extreme for her.”

“I wanted to see someone who was trying to deal with her job as well as she could, but simultaneously she is involved in something else that is bigger than her,” he added.
