Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons Through the Years

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has become an American cultural touchstone in the nine decades since its debut. Beginning early morning on Thanksgiving, it’s become a right of passage for kids and a Holiday tradition for their parents. This reputation has only been bolstered by the Parade’s many appearances in media, such as its central role in the classic film Miracle on 34th Street.
Amongst the many iconic elements of the parade, perhaps none are more well known that the character balloons. Initially introduced in the late 1920’s, the large inflated representations of cartoon, comic, and film characters flying down New York City streets has become the parade’s defining visual.
