They were there, and then they were gone. Ghost towns are as interesting as they are historic, and, thanks to the gold rush, are quite ubiquitous throughout the United States. It’s almost hard to believe that an entire town can pop up out of nowhere, with a generous population, only to disappear entirely a few years later, but in many cases that’s what happened.

America has some pretty awesome ghost towns you can visit. These preserved places provide a peek into the past as well as great photo opportunities.

Some have found alternate uses, while others are just sitting there like abandoned beacons of the past. However, you can always expect a beautiful environment with a slight eerie feel.
